Knowing your identity in Christ

Knowing your identity in Christ

This obviously applies only if you have accepted Jesus and Lord and Savior. If you still think He’s not for you, you could not be more wrong about anything in the entire world. Jesus loves you and died for you to be free from the sin that plagues you.

WHO GOD IS

God is not some old guy with a white beard seated on a throne in heaven poised and ready to hurl lightning bolts when we confess our sins or get found out. He is a loving father. His family is not dysfunctional like many in this world and we should not paint him in the light of fallen earthly fathers. He has never left us. He will never beat up on us or our families. God doesn’t shirk his duties. He hangs the sun in the sky every morning and causes the seasons to come in their time. He never mistakenly turns off our oxygen supply after we enter this earth. He doesn’t forget to help us grow into adults.

He loved us enough to send his most precious thing; his only Son to save us from an eternity of suffering at the hands of the one who has filled our heads with these lies about God.

DEATH BY LIES

The devil has so convinced you the God would not want to have anything with you that you have taken its words as gospel truth. You see, the devil is a pathological liar. No good thing has ever or will ever come out of its mouth or interaction with you. It plants insidious thoughts of recrimination in our minds after selling us with a beautiful pitch as to why we should engage in the shameful behavior of masturbation and other sexual perversions. He is the proverbial bad news! You gotta get out of its camp with utmost haste.

THE GOOD NEWS

Jesus died and conquered the devil and death. It no longer has power over you and I. We choose to give it the power to destroy our lives by rejecting Jesus’ sacrifice for us, no matter how ‘noble’ our reasons seem to be. To break the power of sin, the devil, and death over your life, just say this simple prayer:

Jesus, I choose to accept your sacrifice for me. I acknowledge that I am a sinner and ask that you would forgive me and cleanse me with your precious blood. Break the chains that bind me to the power of sin and destroy any strongholds the devil has set up in my life. I choose you as my Lord and Savior from this day. Amen

If you have prayed that, freedom has begun!

YOUR IDENTITY

That prayer qualifies you for the following description of identity on Christ;

You are declared “righteous”. You are set free form the power of sin that leads to death and no condemnation awaits you. You are made holy in Christ; indeed you are pure and holy in Christ. You are a brand new person. You are made right with God. You are adopted as God’s child and are without fault. Your sins are taken away and you are forgiven. You are identified as belonging to God by the Holy Spirit and have been raised up to sit with Christ in heavenly realms. You are God’s masterpiece and have been brought near to Him. You share in the promise of blessings through Christ and can come boldly and confidently into God’s presence. You are made complete in Christ and are set free from your sinful nature. You will have eternal glory!

Word! You may think that I have coined these on my own. I am happy to break it to you that all these truths are in the Bible. In fact, I got these from our family study Bible at home. Let me break it down for you:

You are declared “righteous”

Romans 3:24

And all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.

You are set free form the power of sin that leads to death

Romans 8:2

Because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death

 …and no condemnation awaits you.

Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus

You are made holy in Christ;

1 Corinthians 1:2

To the church of God in Corinth, to those sanctified in Christ Jesus and called to be his holy people, together with all those everywhere who call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ – their Lord and ours

… [Indeed] you are pure and holy in Christ.

1 Corinthians 1:30

It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God – that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption.

You are a [brand] new person.

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!

You are made right with God.

2 Corinthians 5:21

God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

You are adopted as God’s child

[In love]he predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will – to the praise of his glorious grace, which he has freely given us in the One he loves.

…and are without fault.

Ephesians 1:4

For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight

Your sins are taken away and you are forgiven.

Ephesians 1:7

In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace

You are identified as belonging to God by the Holy Spirit

Ephesians 1:13

And you also were included in Christ when you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation. When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit

…and have been raised up to sit with Christ in heavenly realms.

Ephesians 2:6

And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus

You are God’s masterpiece

Ephesians 2:10

For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

…and have been brought near to Him.

Ephesians 2:13

But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away have been brought near by the blood of Christ

You share in the promise of blessings through Christ

Ephesians 3:6

This mystery is that through the gospel the Gentiles are heirs together with Israel, members together of one body and sharers together in the promise in Christ Jesus.

…and can come boldly and confidently into God’s presence.

Ephesians 3:12

In him and through faith in him we may approach God with freedom and confidence

You are made complete in Christ

Colossians 2:10

And in Christ you have been brought to fullness. He is the head over every power and authority.

…and are set free from your sinful nature.

Colossians 2:11

In him you were also circumcised with a circumcision not performed by human hands. Your whole self ruled by the flesh was put off when you were circumcised by Christ

You will have eternal glory!

2 Timothy 2:10

Therefore I endure everything for the sake of the elect, that they too may obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus, with eternal glory

This is by no means an exhaustive list of the truths of a believer’s identity in Christ. You will notice that it is heavily concentrated in the epistles of Paul to the early church in various locations around the world. The Bible holds a wealth of information that you can seek and find with the help of the Holy Spirit. All you need to do is ask God to open your eyes and heart to see and accept the truths in his Word. Ask him to open your ears as well; that you may hear and recognize his voice as he guides you on this journey and through life.

Then most importantly, read your Bible. You can get it on an app on your phone or access it online if you do not have a hard copy Bible. You can also buy it at the book stores; not only for yourself but also for someone you know who does not have one. Then read it! Do not let it simply sit there. What sword ever slew dragons in its hilt?!

The Word of God is our weapon against the evil powers of this world. Paul describes it so in Ephesians 6:17b;

,and take the Sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. (NLT)
